Practical financial advice for mesothilioma patients
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, finances are probably the last thing you want to think about. However there are a number of financial issues you need to consider and getting them sorted out can ultimately be a source of great comfort to you and your family.
If you don't have health insurance, there are many other sources of financial assistance available, so don't be concerned that you won't have access to good care and support (See Financial Assistance). But even if you do have insurance, be aware that certain costs might not be covered by your plan. For example, travel to and from special treatment centers, as well as lodging and meals in those locations, can add up quickly and are costs that are frequently overlooked when budgeting for mesothelioma treatment (See Help With Out-of-Pocket Expenses). Begin by talking with your insurance carrier to find out what your coverage includes. If you need help figuring this out, ask your doctor or hospital representative to work with your carrier to find the best options for you.
It is prudent to speak with a financial advisor about how to allocate and conserve your assets and also to speak with an attorney about whether you might be entitled to compensation from those responsible for your exposure to asbestos (See Legal Rights). Be sure that whoever you chose to work with has your best interests at heart. Ask friends for their recommendations, check references and contact professional associations to make sure that anyone you are considering working with is a member in good standing.
Another thing you need to decide is how your health care should be administered as your illness progresses. This planning can help you prevent the unnecessary use of your assets for unwanted and/or ineffective treatments and procedures for mesothelioma.
Finally you need to ensure that you have an up-to-date will and estate plan so that your assets and heirlooms are distributed according to your wishes. (See Making a Will)
