Photodynamic Therapy for Mesothelioma Patients
This new approach, based on killing cancer cells with light, is still
experimental for mesothelioma treatment, but it has shown promising results
with other cancer cells. Your doctor would inject a drug that collects
in cancer cells but not in healthy cells. Called a photosensitizer, this
drug makes cells sensitive to certain wavelengths of light. Next (usually
by opening the chest cavity) your doctor would place fiber optic cables
inside you to focus the right frequency of light on the tumor. Then the
drug that's been injected into the cancer cells produces toxic oxygen
molecules that kill the cells.
